Health & Wellness Monitor

Location: Toronto, ON 

Pay: $1,900 flat rate (1 week contract)

Hours: 51 hours total (43 program hours + 8 training hours)

Join the AKFC Youth Leadership Academy as a Health & Wellness Monitor and play a critical role in ensuring the well-being of participants while they engage in an immersive, hands-on civic learning experience in Toronto.

The Youth Leadership Academy, organized and run by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, is dedicated to educating, equipping, and inspiring young Canadians to engage meaningfully with global issues and foster global citizenship. From July 27-31, 2026, AKFC will host its fully funded, 5-day in-person convening at York University, welcoming passionate young leaders for an immersive, collaborative, and hands-on experience. 

The Democratic Engagement Exchange at Toronto Metropolitan University is partnering with AKFC to support participant care, safety, and logistics. This includes delivering evening activities and overnight supervision, as well as collaborating on daytime operations, arrivals and departures, and health support. 

Job Role

The Health & Wellness Monitor plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the program. This position is responsible for managing and dispensing medications, monitoring participant health, and responding to any medical or safety concerns. The Health Monitor works closely with the program leadership team to maintain a safe, organized, and supportive environment for all participants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor participants’ health and well-being throughout the day, noting any signs of illness, injury, or unusual physical or emotional symptoms.

  • Provide a welcoming, supportive presence for participants experiencing homesickness, stress, or mild anxiety, offering basic emotional first aid as needed.

  • Receive, organize, and securely store all participant medications during check-in.

  • Dispense medications throughout the program week in accordance with provided instructions.

  • Return medications to participants at check-out and maintain accurate records.

  • Act as the first responder in the event of any health, safety, or emergency situations.

  • Escalate acute mental health concerns or distress to program leadership and external support staff immediately.

  • Communicate with program leadership and external medical services as needed.

  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all health and safety protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age: 25 years.

  • Valid police record check, interview, and reference checks are required.

  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification 

  • Training in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) or a related field 

  • Experience supporting the health, safety, and well-being of children or youth in camp, school, or program settings.

  • Familiarity with administering medications and following detailed health instructions.

  • Strong observational skills and ability to notice changes in participant health or behavior.

  • Ability to respond calmly, quickly, and effectively in emergency situations.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with participants and program staff.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to maintain accurate records.

  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and sound judgment in handling confidential information.

Compensation:  

$1,900 for one week

  • 43 hours for the week and 8 hours training 

  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided during scheduled shifts.

When You’ll Need To Be Available:

We are seeking a Health Monitor who can commit to the training requirements and the full week of the program. 

Training Day: Saturday, July 25, 2026

Program: Sunday, July 26 - Friday, July 31, 2026

Training:

  • 2 hours for online safeguarding training prior to Academy

  • 6 hours of in person training on Saturday, July 25th 

Hours:

Shifts are primarily daytime hours between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with daily start and end times varying based on arrivals, departures, and program needs. Exact schedule to be confirmed.
