On #InternationalDayOfDemocracy, we’re proud to introduce the Canadian Democracy Delegation - a powerful network uniting leaders from civil society, academia, journalism, and philanthropy. This marks the beginning of a bold new effort - rooted in collaboration with leaders worldwide - united in safeguarding democracy and confronting the rise of authoritarianism.
Led by the Democratic Engagement Exchange, Apathy is Boring, The Circle for Democratic Solidarity, and the Global Centre for Pluralism, this delegation reflects a simple truth: Canada must strengthen democracy at home while contributing to the global democratic community. At a time when democratic values face unprecedented threats, Canadians have both an opportunity and a responsibility to engage.
The delegation’s first stop is the Athens Democracy Forum (Sept 30–Oct 3), where leaders from around the world will gather to explore “New Visions for Hard Realities.” Canadian delegates will connect with international thinkers, exchange ideas and build alliances to tackle democracy’s toughest challenges.
At this moment when principles of diversity are under attack, we’re bringing together some of Canada’s most influential voices in civil society, philanthropy, and academia for a critical conversation on pluralism in action. As part of the Forum, we’ll host a session titled “Practicing Pluralism: Strengthening Democracy in a Fractured World.” Pluralism is not a fixed achievement - it’s a constant practice that both strengthens democracy and forces us to face its hardest tensions. Drawing on Canadian experiences of reconciliation, migration, identity, equity, and polarization, the session will explore how diverse societies can build resilience in the face of global crises, including the challenges we face here at home.
This is just the beginning.
