On #InternationalDayOfDemocracy, we launched the Canadian Democracy Delegation - a network of leaders from civil society, academia, journalism, and philanthropy coming together to engage in global democracy forums.
Led by the Democratic Engagement Exchange, Apathy is Boring, The Circle for Democratic Solidarity, and the Global Centre for Pluralism, this delegation reflects a simple truth: Canada must strengthen democracy at home while also contributing to the global democratic community. At a time when democratic values are under pressure, Canadians have both a responsibility and an opportunity to step up.
Our first stop is the Athens Democracy Forum (Sept 30–Oct 3), where leaders from around the world will gather to explore “New Visions for Hard Realities.” Through this network, Canadian leaders will connect with global thinkers, exchanging ideas to tackle democracy’s toughest challenges together.
We’ll showcase a session on pluralism in action, grounded in the idea that pluralism is never static but a continual practice. It safeguards democracy even as it surfaces its deepest tensions. Drawing on Canadian experiences of reconciliation, migration, identity, equity, and polarization, we’ll explore how diverse societies can build resilience in the face of global crises.
This is just the beginning. Together, we can shape the future of democracy and show how Canadian ideas can help build vibrant, resilient democracies around the world.
